Taking the concept of handmade racks of hooks to a literal end, I’ve recently made several hat & coat racks with wooden pegs, rather than the normal repertoire of cast iron & wrought iron, steel, brass and so on. This doesn’t mean that normal hooks are to be abandoned in favour of handmade pegs – it simply means that pegs are now part of the Hooked on Hooks’ line-up.

As far back as I can remember, which nowadays is three days ago at a stretch, I have shied away from wooden pegs because of the sheer labour intensity involved with making them, and successfully fitting them so that they don’t fall out at the drop of a hat, coat, umbrella, dog lead, kitchen jug or any other item hung on them over time.

Now, however with these problems resolved – the purchase of very expensive drill bits for clean-cut holes, the acquisition of very high quality, bomb-proof glue for fixing the pegs into place, and a near Buddha-like will to painstakingly hand-fashion each peg to exactly the correct size – I have finally ventured into the coat-rack-with-pegs field.
