Hooks for hat & coats may be old hat, but have you ever tried to live without them? If so, you may have grown accustomed to the sight of garments, dog leads, shopping bags, umbrellas, hats and scarves, strewn about the place or never to hand when you want them. But of course there are hooks and hooks, coat racks and coat racks. Many are too awful for words – too awful to be much more than an ugly, utilitarian ‘thing’ glaring at you from the wall.

But hat & coat racks don’t have to be ugly and utilitarian. To see what I mean, go to my website – www.hookedonhooks.co.uk – and check out the Hooked on Hooks’ range of handmade hat & coat racks. Don’t forget to look at the Archive pages as well – http://www.hookedon  hooks .c.uk/c/20/archive – where you can see well over a hundred examples of sold items, including dozens made to order. Virtually any permutation of anything you see here and in my on-line shop can be made to your exact requirements. All you have to do is ask me – Steve Gamblin – at hello@hookedonhooks.co.uk.

But wasn’t this supposed to be about croquet mallet racks? Yes, in addition the usual Hooked on Hooks’ repertoire (which even includes hedgehog houses!), I’m now making croquet mallets racks. Of course you may actually enjoy tripping over croquet mallets in your shed, garage or summer-house, in which case, carry on – break a leg.

If not, the croquet mallet racks pictured have a rough timber finish and sell for £17.00 per mallet.

And if you prefer a smooth, wax, stain, or painted finish, reckon on £20-25 per mallet, plus shipping. For more information contact me at hello@hookedonhooks.co.uk.

A bit of flag-waving…

Worthy of special mention is the recent sale of not one but two – and therefore the entire stock – of the Hooked on Hooks’ Union Jack hat & coat racks.

Snapped up by Kerrie Kilpatrick-Weinberg (pictured with son, Sam), Kerrie and Sam, who are as English as a cream tea and croquet, fell for the racks whilst visiting the Hooked on Hooks’ workshop on a trip to Britain from Santa Barbara where Kerrie and family have long hung their hats (& coats).

Yes, I never saw that one coming – both Union Jack coat racks – off to settle in America!

By way of a plug, Kerrie is founder of ART WALK FOR KIDS/ADULTS, whose mission “is to focus on benefiting artists with disabilities, special needs, autistic, learning disabled, and at-risk youth and adults in their positive environments through weekly art work shops”.

And speaking of plugs, please don’t forget to look at my unique range of handmade hat & coat racks at www.hookedonhooks.co.uk. And if you can’t find what you’re looking for in my on-line shop, simply commission me to make exactly what you want. Francois Derobe undressed…Well, dressed up, really…

Master Wood & Stone Sculptor, Francois Derobe, as he's never been seen before...

Master Wood & Stone Sculptor, Francois Derobe, as he’s never been seen before…

You don’t meet many people who do what they do, like what they do, and don’t at some point wish for greener fields, lusher pastures, longer rainbows, fresher waters….Well, you get the idea….

And Master Wood & Stone Sculptor Francois Derobe is no exception. Absolutely masterful at what he does – turning bits of wood or stone into fabulous, aesthetic masterpieces – but after more than 40 years hunched over a workbench, if Francois could, there’s nothing he’d like better than to Tread the Boards – yes, act!

And why not? Who are we to say Francois would not make an accomplished actor? And that is why Francois, aided and abetted by his family, and our family, gladly submitted to the opportunity to pose in a series of tableau, staged by writer and close friend, Alan Rawlings. Alan has written a fantasy trilogy, The Ages of Nuropa I, II and III, which are to be promoted online with a striking series of pictures inspired by the books. On top of everything, Alan is a special effects creative genius who not only designs all the costumes but makes the most extraordinary things out of latex, like man-eating plants, giant bees and cat-size spiders. He does all that make up as well! And what better role for Francois than Stone Sculptor!

Return of the French Connection

Coat rack by Steve Gamblin - u8nique hand-carving by French Master Wood Carver & Stone Sculptor, Francois Derobe

Coat rack by Steve Gamblin – unique hand-carving by French Master Wood Carver & Stone Sculptor, Francois Derobe

He’s back… Read all about The French Connection by clicking on this link: https://hookedonhooks.wordpress.com/2011/09/.

And although Master Wood & Stone Sculptor, Francois, and family, have returned to France, already the pictured rack is up and running and on sale in the Hooked on Hooks’ online shop.  (See for yourself at http://www.hookedonhooks.co.uk/p/245/1940s-copper-plated-hooks-on-recycled-hand-carved-french-oak-plinth).

Included in this year’s batch of recycled wood from Francois’ workshop in France are several sections of oak, some lovely 50-year-old pine, and several pieces of heart-poundingly gorgeous 250-year-old oak panelling from a church altar.

Lovely to think that these assorted remnants of wood from a workshop far away in France will end their days not on a bonfire but as gorgeous hat & coat racks in homes both small and grand somewhere out there…..
