Unique, handmade scimitar-shaped hat & coat rack in American cherry with traditional brass hooks

Unique, handmade scimitar-shaped hat & coat rack in American cherry with traditional brass hooks

This handmade, utterly unique hat & coat rack from Hooked on Hooks was specially commissioned to tie in with a mirror with a similar sweeping cherry wood surround. Made from four individual sections of wood, the rack is fitted with traditional solid brass hooks. Smooth as skin to touch, it is finished with oil that even resists tea, coffee, red wine and other stubborn stains – but most importantly for a coat rack, water splashes.

Thank you for your prompt reply. It is unusual to find someone with such great service these days. Have saved your details for future use and recommendations.

Nikki Hurst, Lincoln, Lincs

The hooks just arrived. They are perfect, just as I hoped they would look. I’m so frustrated by the rubbish quality hooks that are on sale everywhere these days. Thanks for the careful packaging too. I am so pleased I saw your website. Worth every penny.

Julie Trenholm, Norwich, Norfolk

Thank you for all your emails – the rack arrived safely today. It is absolutely beautiful – perfect colour match!!

Clint & Jackie Bower, Arborfield, Berks

This is just a courtesy email to say that the coat hook arrived Thursday, beautifully packaged and in excellent condition upon opening. It is now, in pride of place in the hallway with our coats hanging off it. It really is unique and ideal for the space and stlye that is ours. I wish I had more places to put more coat hooks… I will be sure to recommend you to any of my friends that wish to find something really special and unique.

Thanks again

Charlotte Peace, Dudley, West Midlands

I just wanted to let you know that I really love my hooks. They are something I hope to hold onto for many years. I love the quirky polka dot hooks against the reclaimed wood. I love that they are something original and not mass produced. Thanks you so much and all the best with your business, I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Christine Purdy, Tandragee, County Armagh

We had great fun mounting the coat rack last night! A good job to take our minds off work today. It looks fantastic and we’re both very chuffed. I’ll send you a piccie later this week. Thanks so much for everything. (See photo above)

Pippa Bateman, Putney, London

I just wanted to let you know that our hooks arrived today. We are extremely pleased with them and would like to say thank you very much. I could not wait to get them up on the wall so my husband obligingly got to work after dinner to hang them on the wall. I thought you might like to see a photo of them hanging in their new place in our hallway. At last I can hang the coats without them dropping off the hooks!
Thanks again for your help and assistance, it has been a pleasure and you have been extremely helpful from start to finish. I would definitely recommend you in the future. I wish you every success with your business. Thanks again.

Colour me Drawing Room Blue…or any one of 132 stunning colours

20 May

Farrow & Ball’s stunning Drawing Room Blue – one of 132 possible colour choices now offered by Hooked on Hooks

Just  like you, me, Fido the dog, and everything else on the planet, Hooked on Hooks is evolving. From utterly plain racks to the positively curvaceous, with trefoil, quatrefoil and budded cross cut-outs, and different routed edges, plinth designs have grown increasingly elaborate. Latest in the ever-expanding desire to turn an essential, essentially boring household item into an aesthetically beautiful item of furniture – is the introduction of colour.

And not just any old colour.

Farrow & Ball of Dorset have been making paints since the 1930s – and not just any old paints. Paints that are so environmentally friendly, you could have them for breakfast. Paints with “the ultimate in depth of colour and elegance of finish.” Paints that are used by none other than the National Trust. For a sense of what I mean – computer pictures never tell the full story – click on the link and feast your eyes on their 132-strong colour chart (http://www.farrow-ball.com/colours/paint/fcp-category/list?resetFilters=true).

Hooked on Hooks can now produce coat racks finished in any of these colours. Just choose from the chart and I’ll take care of the rest. To see a few ready-made samples of coloured hat & coat racks, scroll through the Hooked on Hooks’s Product page at http://www.hookedonhooks.co.uk/products and Gallery at http://www.hookedonhooks.co.uk/gallery. To discuss the type of plinth, hooks, and colour you require, simply email me at hello@hookedonhooks.co.uk.

Wonderfully one-off rack of hooks… (SOLD)

6 Dec 15-hook rack
15-hook rack

Wonderfully one-off, 15-hook, antique English oak rack on sale for £185.00 (SOLD)

I may have said it before, but this time it’s true. This spectacular hat & coat rack – replete with 15 double hooks – may well be the hat & coat rack to end all hat & coat racks.

All of 8 feet 10 inches long (269cm in the other currency), it has enough hooks for a football team – or indeed, just a hall, boot room, bedroom, or kitchen in someone’s home. It would also look fantastic in a hotel foyer, restaurant, shop or boutique, or just about any other place where people need to hang hats, coats, scarves, umbrellas, dog leads and the like.

Uniquely for Hooked on Hooks, this is a coat rack that started out in life, not as wall panelling in a medieval church, not as a side strut on a four-poster bed, nor indeed as a Victorian floorboard. No, this is literally a coat rack that started out in life as a coat rack.

Removed from a large house during renovations, all but three of the original wooden pegs were either missing or broken off. Languishing beneath a pile of old wood at Semley Reclamation, it was waiting for just the right person to come along to restore it, if not to its former glory, then certainly to a fabulous reworked version of its former self.

Coated with an ancient dark stain and looking very sorry for itself indeed – not to say, just plain ugly – the first task was to see what sort of wood lay beneath. Several hours and many sheets of sandpaper later, I was amazed to discover not just a piece of English oak, but a completely flawless piece of English oak  without so much as a single knot. Another even more pleasing discovery was not just fixing holes for attaching the rack to a wall, but fixing holes with solid inlaid brass countersunks – all ten of them.

To re-peg or not to re-peg, that was the next question. After some deliberation, I decided to abandon the idea of restoring all the old wooden pegs. Instead, I’d fit one of the most striking hat & coat hooks around, the double, solid brass, antique finish, Edwardian-era design double hook with genuine porcelain finials. If you’re going to go for it, I reasoned, why not really go for it? The point was, opting for ‘normal hooks’ would neatly avoid all the difficulties associated with wooden pegs – cracking, shrinkage, splitting, gluing etc.

Currently this wonderfully one-off rack – which is, incidentally at least Edwardian and probably Victorian – is on sale at Semley Reclamation, Dorset. Readers of previous blogs will know that this not for sale on the Hooked on Hooks website but can be retrieved upon request from Semley, if you are not in the area. Contact: Semley Reclamation on 01747 850350. Hooked on Hooks at hello@hookedonhooks.co.uk. Cost: £185.00 with FREE courier delivery to anywhere mainland UK.

French Connection – SOLD

12 Nov

There’s no doubt about it, whether it’s a Caribbean island, a Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport touring supercar, or yes, a hat & coat rack(!), the more unique it is – and the more expensive – the easier it is to sell. This fabulous rack, featured in an earlier blog – The French Connection – has flown off the shelf at a cost of £160.00.French Master Wood Carver, Stone Sculptor, and personal friend Francois Derobe, who was responsible for the extraordinary carving on the rack, will be back in Wiltshire next year when, hopefully, he’ll be slicing up another piece of wood for Hooked on Hooks.

Meanwhile three smaller works featuring Francois’s handiwork are still available. (See SH0018 & SH0019 on the Products page of the Hooked on Hooks website at www.hookedonhooks.co.uk).The third rack – pictured below – is for sale at The Gallery, Stourhead. To purchase the rack, which features a lovely pair of Victorian brass hat & coast hooks on a section of waney-rustic edge oak from the Stourhead Estate, visit The Gallery in person (call to confirm availability on 01747 840747) or email hello@hookedonhooks.co.uk so that I can retrieve it and forward it to you.

Don’t forget those wood carving chisels, Francois…
